I pulled the original numbers matching TH400 out of my 70' and replaced it with a rebuilt TH400, (basically so I could still drive the car while I figure out who I want to rebuild the original!)

I have talked with a couple of local transmission shops and they get that "deer in the headlights" look when I explain to them that I want the transmission rebuilt 100% original to "correct" standards including appearance.

I need some guidance as to what the original finish, detailing, etc. should be for the transmission along with any suggestions of a good rebuilder that "get's it" from an originality standpoint.

I don't think the tranny has ever been rebuilt, it was leaking fluid out of the front at a fairly steady rate....I want it done right.

I don't have a problem in shipping it as long as I know it's going to the right guy for the rebuild.

Thanks for the help!

Ben, I deal with that every day so I feel your pain. In a nutshell, the Turbo 400 case will be natural aluminum, the Modulator is a semi gloss black and needs to be the earlier large design not the later cadmium plated small design. The govenor side cover should be natural steel and the oil pan should be a tin plated steel or at the very least a dull zinc finish. The oil dip stick tube has a dark copper like coloration to it. There is also an ink stamp that is put on the top of the bellhousing. I will email you some photos.
