I looked at a 70 L78 4 speed car today. I think the guy is a bit overpriced. Car has the original short block, and that is all. No trans (M21 Muncie) but the original 3.55 rear is there. No need for pics, imagine a rusty hulk that needs every panel including floors and trunk, and you'll see this car. :speechless:

The build sheet is real, car has some options.... tinted glass, remote OSRV mirror, Cowl hood, power steering, posi., gauges (the cluster is the nicest part on the car...) buckets and console, AM radio with rear seat speaker....

Dark Forest Green with a black vinyl top, and black interior, white stripes...

Car comes with new repro front fenders and fenderwells, repro wheelhouses inner and outer, repro rear 1/4 for one side, and a GM 1/4 for the other. Hood is good, air cleaner is there, new decklid and trunk floor. (I did say it was rusty, right???) Also has new bumpers and a few other misc panels.

Seller is asking $15K, I think it's worth much less seeing as all the big $$$ items are gone under the hood.

Whatcha think???

Thanks

Tough call Dave. Not much to work with except original block. Killer colours in my opinion. Could be a high dollar car when done, but an estimate of costs to get it there may prove too much. Might be worth it as "a keeper", but possibly not for "resale" )(

I'm like Don. If I were going to keep it for myself, I could make it work. Shouldn't be a problem with your talent and ability. The color is the only real draw back, but what can I say, I just bought a Green car. The reason is because of what it is and if I were looking for a 70 L78 project I'd probably buy it. As you know it cost just as much to restore a less desirable car as it does a highly desirable car. I would say it is a Highly desirable car. I had rather have a L78 over a LS6. JMO

I agree that $15K is a bit steep for a rusted hulk. Probably take $20K or more just to put the body and paint together, then all the small parts that are missing.:speechless: I could easily see this ending up near $50k in resto costs, plus your time to round it all up.
Keep after him and get it for $7,500 or so, then maybe you can afford to do the car without being upside down.

All in all, someone needs to save the car.

It sounds too high to me also. The L78 part is really tempting, but with the Green color, the rust and the $15,000 price, I think I would hold off on it.

Dave it is kind of like a 40 acre tract of land and a small brick house I tried to buy next to me last year. I just could not advance the land enough to allow for the headaches of a rent house. I would have paid a premium for the land if the house was not on it.

This car is much the same for you. As you are now doing this work for a living it comes down to business. Every hour you work on this car could be billed to someone else. You know what the work would cost for a customer and why absorb a loss just to say you built a L-78. For you I would think you would need to get bought as cheap as possible for a customer who wants you to build it.

This car represents a lot of different ways to lose money and for me it just ain't that much fun for what it costs.

Buy it and sit on it until you find someone wanting a L78.
