Just a little mischief here. Cast iron or aluminum heads?

I've only installed one set of aluminum heads, on a Mopar 360 engine. So far I personally haven't noticed any significant gain except weight reduction. My Cutlass with an iron headed stock 350 will still out run it :)

I cracked my head a couple of weeks ago at the auction. Darn hood fell on it.

Factory or Aftermarket?

I'll be running a set of big valve ported 781s I got a deal on.
My first set of BB heads.

Dan, I'm running the same heads. 781 with porting. When you say large valve, what size are you talking about?

Iron GM here. #14022601 305cid heads. Really woke up my lazy smogger 350 for sure. I haven't pushed it past 6400 to see where it redlines yet...a little chicken to go much further with cast rotating assembly.

I have 2 aluminum headed engines. Neither are actually installed and running :speechless:

Would like to have a set of aluminum heads for my 427 Elky,to lower the weight some, but I don't see many with a small combustion chamber like my 215's.I would like to keep my cr up in the high 11's where it is.Most aluminum heads I see are 113cc and up.My 215's are in the 104cc range. Is there a way to keep the cr up with an aluminum head with out changing my closed chamber pistons?

This is the kind of "argument" that is healthy. There are aluminum heads on my car which were there when I bought it nine years ago. Not really sure about any performance improvement, but they sure save a bunch of weight. I think they look cool as well.

The iron headed 350 that's in my Cutlass performs fairly well for what it is. It's more or less a stock 350, with a little more cam in it. The heads are 441 castings. I've had the car running 14.60's on street tires with a 3.42 gear in it, it may be a tenth or 2 quicker now with the 3.73's in it. I'm not so sure alum, heads would make much of a difference on it. We're going to find out once I do the rear in the Cuda. The engine in that car is fairly well matched to the 350 in the Cutlass as far as compression, and cam are concerned. I believe the combustion chambers are comparible between the heads as well.

I've got one of each set, too. My understanding it that once the compression and hp get high - above 11:1, or so, and maybe 500 hp, you need aluminum to get to the next level. Not sure why/how, personally. But I know when my 555 was done, there was never a discussion about which way to go. Aluminum was a given.

I have a set of the GM 077 aluminum heads that I'm thinking about putting on my engine this winter. My compression will drop to around 10 to 1 or maybe a little lower. Still trying to decide.
