My dad bought a 72 Chevelle SS and just pulled the motor out of it. He is not sure if it is matching numbers or not and he would like some help figuring it out. The car VIN# is 1D37U2K625478. The numbers on the front of the block are T1027IV 185138542. Back of block 3916323 CONV 2 GM3. Behind flywheel HI-PERF K16 TRUCK PASS Right cylinder head 3904390 GM6T Left 3872702 GM2.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

The VIN sequence indicates an early April, 1972 built Chevelle. The engine date is October 27; the partial VIN on the engine pad (probably 18S138542) is for a 1968 full size car built in St. Louis; the IV suffix code on the date also indicates a full size car with a 396/325 and TH400. You VIN does indicate a 402 engine by the letter "U" but this engine is not the original. The 3872702 head is from a 1966 396 and the 3904390 head from a 1967 396. Looks like an engine made up of spare parts. :speechless:

Thanks so much for the terrific information. Now he has to decide whether to rebuild this motor or start fresh with a crate motor.

Hey Beth from the West! Post some pic's of your fathers car. I like 72's, especially BB's.

Might be just as inexpensive to go with a crate motor since this isn't the original engine anyway.

I am in the process of getting the pictures to post and he found a great deal on a 454 just needs assembeling so he will probably sell the 396.
